Norwegian summer light // backlit portraits

Hello all, I am back after a few weeks of computer-free vacations. Luckily it hasn’t been a camera-free vacation, so I have plenty of pics to share with you! Even if the summer weather here in Norway hasn’t been the best, the photography light has been great! There is really something about the Nordic lights, and even if the overcast weather of Guangzhou is perfect for pictures in a technical sense, I have really enjoyed practicing using the light in my pictures this summer. After all, photography means painting with light, right…:)

Backlit pictures is one way of using the light when there is a lot of it. In portraits the light coming from behind will frame the face in a nice way while lighting the hair. This way you can still get even light and not too strong lights in the face, and the person you are taking pictures of doesn’t have all the sun in her face and thus no need for squinting either. Finding the right exposure can be a little tricky, just try to make sure the face doesn’t get too dark while the rest is overexposed. All you have to do is practice. :)

Here are a couple of shots of some of my very favorite girls, my daughter and my niece&soon-to-be-almost-daughter, who is moving with us to Abu Dhabi in a few weeks.
